Walking in Campus Buildings

Courtesy and Awareness

Iowa State spaces are used for many purposes. Please be thoughtful and aware of your surroundings.

  • Walk at a comfortable pace, not at high speed
  • Some buildings have restricted or limited access
  • Heavy traffic at peak times, such as before and after class times, may impact your route
  • Pay attention to where you are walking - don't walk distracted

Building Information and Accessibility

Indoor walking routes have been configured for several university buildings. The maps include the locations of elevators and accessible entrances. Be aware of access, activities, and other related factors in unmapped buildings.

Tips for Safe Walking

Indoors or outdoors, get your steps in year-round while keeping safety in mind.

  • Warm up and cool down
  • Use correct technique – steady pace, swing your arms freely, stand straight, foot strikes heel to toe
  • Bring walking shoes, or keep some at work to use for walks
  • Drink plenty of water

Taking the Stairs

  • Use the handrail – two points of contact will help with stability
  • Don’t run – walk
  • Avoid distractions – cell phone, reading, or even conversation
  • Make sure you have a free hand in case of a fall
  • Watch for slippery spots, especially when tracked in during inclement weather
  • Survey the conditions – uneven steps, lighting, or unusual stairs (e.g. Beardshear stairs)
  • Be aware of what you’re wearing – slippery shoes, or long garments
  • Avoid carrying items up and down stairways
